Prepare an object photo for DXF

Photographs need more preparation because shadows, reflections, texture, and perspective can all become unwanted DXF contours.

Control the photograph

Place the flat object on matte white paper and photograph it from directly above. Use broad, even lighting from both sides so the edge does not cast a dark offset shadow. Keep the camera sensor parallel to the object to reduce perspective distortion.

Include a ruler only while checking scale, then crop it out before conversion. Ruler ticks and printed numbers create many small contours and can overwhelm the part outline.

Turn the photo into a tracing source

Before uploading, isolate the object from the background in an image editor. Remove the shadow, fill the object as one dark shape, make the background white, and correct any visible perspective distortion. The resulting mask should look closer to a stencil than to a photograph.

  • Crop tightly around the object.
  • Remove highlights, texture, and cast shadows.
  • Check that every intended hole remains open and visible.
  • Do not rely on the traced photo for tolerance-critical dimensions.

Know when to redraw manually

A photo-derived DXF is best treated as a rough reference. Lens distortion and perspective can change straight edges into curves and circles into ellipses. Automatic tracing cannot reconstruct the original engineering dimensions.

Use the result to capture a general outline, then rebuild straight edges, arcs, holes, and symmetry in CAD. For a precision part, direct measurement or a calibrated scan is a better source than a photograph.
