Scanned line drawing to DXF

A straight, high-contrast scan can provide useful tracing geometry when the original drawing is clean and its limitations are understood.

Start with a flat, straight scan

Scan the drawing directly above the page or use a flatbed scanner. Perspective distortion from a handheld photograph changes angles and relative dimensions, even if the drawing looks acceptable on screen.

A resolution around 300 to 600 dpi is usually enough for ordinary workshop sketches. More pixels do not restore missing detail and can preserve paper texture or dust that later becomes extra geometry.

Prepare the line art

Increase contrast until the intended lines are clearly dark and the paper is close to white. Remove handwriting, dimensions, fold marks, colored fills, and construction lines unless they should appear in the DXF.

  • Deskew the page before cropping.
  • Use one known dimension later to calibrate the DXF scale.
  • Remove labels and dimensions that should not become contours.
  • Inspect thick strokes: both edges may be traced as separate lines.

Use the result as a tracing layer

Automatic tracing follows visible pixels; it does not understand centerlines, design intent, tolerances, or hidden geometry. A thick pen line can produce a narrow closed outline instead of one CAD centerline.

After conversion, scale the drawing from a known measurement. Redraw critical circles, slots, straight edges, and symmetric features with CAD constraints, then delete the rough traced geometry that is no longer needed.

Prepare the source image first, then return to the converter for a test DXF.
